Pay and conditions of service for teaching and support staff in maintained schools are set out in three documents. The statutory School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document sets out how teachers are to be paid and key conditions of service. Two collective agreements – Conditions of Service for School Teachers in England and Wales (the Burgundy Book) and the National Agreement on Pay and Conditions of Service(the Green Book) – set out additional conditions of service for teachers and support staff respectively, which can be incorporated into individual contracts of employment.

Academies, free schools and independent schools are not required to follow these documents, although many choose to do so for their teaching staff. Academies may inherit their terms through the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006, if they convert from the maintained sector.
