Employers’ Dos and Don’ts Checklist for Dealing with Parental Bereavement Leave


Employers should:

  • advise employees of the entitlement to take time off in the event that they lose a child under the age of 18 or suffer a stillbirth

  • remember the different notice requirements for taking parental bereavement leave — no advance notice is needed if leave is to be taken within the first 56 days of the death. The employee just needs to make contact by telephone/email/text message to say that their leave will start that day. A week’s notice is needed if leave is to be taken from day 57 onwards
