In care settings, manual handling operations commonly include the handling or moving of service users.

In an early years provision manual handling applies to any activity that involves moving loads, such as lifting pots and pans in the kitchen, stacking shelves, moving bags of equipment or boxes of toys or books, or moving desks, tables or chairs. It also involves the manual handling of children who require assistance with moving around, especially those with disabilities or special mobility needs.
