Bariatric moving and handling refers to the moving and handling of extremely heavy people (those who weigh in excess of 25 stones or 158kg). All care organisations are advised to have a bariatric moving and handling policy.

Extremely heavy service users can present a number of additional challenges where manual handling is concerned.

To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, a specific handling risk assessment must be carried out for each service user at their initial assessment when the plan of care is being devised. A specific handling action plan (or safe system of work) for the manual handling of the service user can then be completed.
