Employers must:

  • grant reasonable time off with pay to a pregnant worker for ante-natal care

  • carry out a risk assessment of the work activities of new and expectant mothers to identify any hazards which could harm the mother or baby

  • offer suitable alternative employment to a pregnant employee (or new mother) if a risk assessment confirms that her duties are such as to pose a risk to her health and safety or that of her baby

  • ensure all pregnant employees are afforded the right to take up to 52 weeks’ maternity leave and to return to work in the same or equivalent job
