A risk assessment is a thorough look at a workplace to identify any hazards, situations or processes that may cause harm to people. In a school or early years’ service, this would include harm to children, pupils, staff and visitors. If potential problems are identified the assessment involves an analysis or evaluation to determine how likely or serious the risk is. Measures are then put in place to effectively reduce, control or eliminate the risk.

This topic covers how to conduct a risk assessment and manage any identified risks. Related information can be found in the topic on the Management of Health and Safety at Work topic.

The Early Years Risk Assessment Tool can be found in the Tools index on the homepage. It can be used to create, review and circulate assessments and to generate action plans with suggested control measures.
