Lifting equipment is the general term for work equipment primarily used for lifting or lowering loads and includes attachments for anchoring the equipment, fixing or supporting it.

All lifting operations must be planned and supervised by a competent person and suitable lifting equipment selected for the task. Lifting equipment safety must consider the suitability and stability of both the lifting equipment and the load it is to lift. There is a statutory requirement for all of these factors plus a requirement for regular examination and testing of lifting equipment under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).
