This general risk assessment and arrangements cover the risk of growth of legionella pneumophila and other bacteria from the family Legionnellaceae in the water supplies in the workplace. This can lead to the bacteria escaping into the atmosphere as breathable water droplets or vapour, which can cause progressive and potentially fatal atypical pneumonia. Legionella is present in most water systems; it is a very common contaminant.
All personnel who are required to either work at, or visit, the place of work or the area surrounding it where legionella may be present in the water systems are at risk. People especially at risk include the elderly, the ill and those who smoke.
