Summary

In order to transport goods to or from the continent, or to or from Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, it is necessary to plan the best route and to secure appropriate accommodation on ferry services (or possibly Eurotunnel in the case of the continent). It is necessary to understand what restrictions may be imposed on carriage.

Similar planning must be undertaken if a route is to involve traversing one or more of the Alpine tunnels or crossing any part of the Mediterranean Sea. An option for certain long continental journeys is to drive on to a train, known as a “rolling highway”, which is able to transport complete vehicle units for significant distances.
