Incineration is tightly regulated under the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED). Schedule 13 of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 requires the Environment Agency to take into account the requirements of the IED when setting permit conditions for incineration installations. It also requires operators of incineration plant to include the information specified in the IED when applying for a permit.
This topic covers the regulatory requirements for plants, permits, emissions and monitoring.
For more details on environmental permitting, see the Environmental Permitting Programmes topic.
