Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. It originated in China at the end of 2019 and has since spread around the world in a pandemic.
The most common symptoms are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Most people only get mild symptoms and about 80% recover without needing special treatment. However, a small percentage can become seriously ill and develop difficulty breathing. For some of these the disease may be fatal.
COVID-19 is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, for older people, and for those with long-term conditions such as diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.
