The primary aim of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms is to protect the fundamental rights of Europe's citizens against abuse by the State and its institutions.

The Human Rights Act 1998 transposes the provisions of the European Convention into UK law. As a result, the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the European Convention are directly enforceable in UK courts and tribunals.
