There are four principal sources of funding in higher education:

  • grants from funding councils

  • research funding

  • private endowments

  • tuition fees.

Some research is funded under the dual-support system, which is a combination of research funding and the Government grant.

The extent to which an institution benefits from each source depends on its size, complexity, performance in teaching and research, history and the specialist nature of its offering.
