French health and safety law is contained in Part 4 of the Code du Travail (Labour Code). The current version of the Labour Code is not fully available in English, but an English language summary is available on the ILO website.
Safety obligations are imposed on an individual known as the head of the establishment, normally a company director or senior manager. The health and safety committee is the main body protecting workers in large workplaces, and trade unions have a statutory role in the running of medium-sized and large companies.
Employers are defined as those who in exchange of remuneration and by virtue of a labour contract have authority over employees.
