Food poisoning is a potentially serious health condition caused by consuming food that has been contaminated. A number of viruses and bacteria cause food poisoning, including Campylobacter, Salmonella and E. coli. These organisms are usually killed by the adequate cooking of food and by adherence to safe, clean and hygienic working practices.
Food poisoning can affect service users in both domiciliary care and care homes. Infections can be a particular risk for people who may be frail, elderly, immunocompromised or in poor health.
