Chemicals are classified to identify flammable liquid properties that may constitute a hazard during normal handling, use, transport and disposal. Since 1 June 2015 the classification system for supply and use is based on the EU’s Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP). This implements for supply the UN’s UN Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS or Purple Book). For transport, the system is based on the UN’s Model Regulations for the Transport of Dangerous Goods (the Model Regulations or Orange Book), which is also harmonised with the GHS system, though with some additional provisions. These systems are based upon the liquid’s flashpoint temperature, though other factors may also be taken into account.
