Explosive and pyrotechnic substances are defined as:

  • solid or liquid substances (or mixtures) capable by chemical reaction of producing gases at such a temperature and pressure and at such a speed as could cause damage to surroundings

  • substances or mixtures designed to produce an effect by heat, light, sound, gas or smoke or a combination of these as a result of non-detonative self-sustaining exothermic chemical reactions.

Various regulations apply to the manufacture, supply, use and transport of explosive materials.

Transport requirements for explosives are covered by the United Nations (UN) requirements applicable to all dangerous goods (transport by road is governed by ADR).
