Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) has brought about widespread changes to the management of chemicals in the EU. Full registration is required for new substances placed on the market in a quantity of 1t per year or more on or after 1 June 2008.

REACH came into force on 1 June 2007, albeit with some longer transitional provisions for some of its requirements. Initially, the changes required were rather limited, being slight adjustments to the safety data sheet (SDS).

From 1 January 2021, the UK has its own version of REACH. This topic covers EU REACH only.

This topic remains of interest to those manufacturing or supplying chemicals within the EU, as they will have to comply with the EU REACH regulations. For those manufacturing or supplying in the UK, UK REACH will need to be followed. UK REACH is very similar to EU REACH with significant changes to the Agency responsible and timescales. Over time it is anticipated that there will be further divergence from the two policies.
