To support growing preference for an audit process that covers all quality management and environmental management systems, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 19011:2018, an audit standard that addresses the auditing requirements of both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

ISO 19011 provides guidance on the principles of auditing, the establishment of an audit programme, the execution of quality management and environmental management system (EMS) audits and the competence required of the system auditors. The standard is applicable to all organisations conducting internal or external audits, or needing to operate an audit programme. For further information on auditing skills, see the EMS Accreditation, Certification and Verification topic.
