The EU Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life vehicles requires Member States to ensure that:
vehicle manufacturers and importers pay all or a significant part of the costs of vehicle take-back
producers limit the use of hazardous substances in vehicles, increase the proportion of recycled materials and design vehicles for easier recycling
producers meet recovery and recycling targets
treatment facilities operate to higher environmental standards and have permits.
