End-of-life Vehicles: In-depth

Summary

The EU Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life vehicles requires Member States to ensure that:

• vehicle manufacturers and importers pay all or a significant part of the costs of vehicle take-back

• producers limit the use of hazardous substances in vehicles, increase the proportion of recycled materials and design vehicles for easier recycling

• producers meet recovery and recycling targets

• treatment facilities operate to higher environmental standards and have permits.
