This policy sets out the values, principles and practices of our approach to service users who die while in our care, or in hospital, while still a resident of this care home.
The policy should be used with reference to other policies on end-of-life care, including the policy on advance care planning.
The care home’s policy is in line with the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, the Regulated Services (Service Providers and Responsible Individuals) (Wales) Regulations 2017, and national end-of-life care programmes.
Care Inspectorate Wales has clarified during the current COVID-19 pandemic, they will not be undertaking routine inspections, but once the situation has resolved these will resume. They will not be considering retrospectively actions taken in the best interests of those who use services. Action would only be taken where wilful neglect or deliberate harm is identified. Care homes should continue to risk assess and document decisions made as evidence.
