An environmental management system (EMS) should be an integral part of an organisation’s corporate management systems.

The EMS contributes to corporate management by focusing on environmental issues that relate to an organisation's activities, products and services. This can reduce environmental impacts and improve business performance.

This topic describes three established EMSs currently in use — ISO 14001, EMAS and ISO 14005 — and the general points of reference linking them. There are other EMS models available in the UK. See also the An Introduction to Environmental Management Systems (EMS) topic.
