This topic covers the requirements of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, which is a qualification for professional drivers of certain goods and passenger vehicles. It was developed as a result of EU Directive 2003/59, which requires drivers to be continuously trained throughout their working lives.

Employers' Duties

Employers should:

  • ensure that drivers complete 35 hours of approved Periodic Training within each relevant five-year period

  • check that training suppliers are providing “approved” training courses

  • not breach the Drivers' Hours Regulations or the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations when organising training for drivers
