Many drivers are away from their bases for long hours during the working day and have to spend nights away from home. It is reasonable that they should receive some recompense for nights out and out-of-pocket expenses. Employers are free to negotiate with their drivers the amounts that should be payable. Invariably, this is no more than payment of a standard night-out allowance and occasionally a meal allowance.
