Although independent schools and academies need to meet the standards specified in the Education Act 2002, they do not have to follow the National Curriculum. Full-time, supervised education for pupils of compulsory school age must be offered by schools and should provide pupils with experience in the following areas: linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, physical, and aesthetic and creative.

Schools are expected to ensure that they plan and provide effectively in order to develop pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. They are also required to actively promote fundamental British values.
