A serious pandemic outbreak of H1N1 influenza — or swine flu — prompted a major health alert in the UK and the rest of the world in 2009. By August 2010, the World Health Organization had declared the pandemic over, which means that cases are unlikely to peak in sufficient numbers to represent a major public health issue. However, swine flu should not be ignored and it is recommended that all people in high risk groups be vaccinated against it.
