Construction sites are generally considered as workplaces, in the same way as offices or shops. The primary legislation, therefore, is still the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974. Many of the regulations that apply to workplaces also apply to construction. However, construction also has its own industry-specific piece of legislation, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM Regulations).

It is probable that at some stage in the management of school premises it will be necessary to have some construction work done. This may be maintenance or refurbishment, or even new construction, but it will involve the observance of a number of specific rules and regulations.
