Summary

Academies must be governed by an academy trust. This has two layers of governance: the members, who operate at a strategic level; and the governors, who are responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the trust.

The trust board can be configured to suit the individual requirements of the academy.

This topic covers the legal constitution, status, structure and membership of an academy board. Related information, including the training of board members, can be found in the Functions of the Governing Body topic.
