There are various types of businesses that can trade within the UK (Scottish rules are slightly different). Different business structures will suit different businesses and types of business. Business can and do change their structure (ie from sole trader to limited company) as the business develops or changes.

Every business, regardless of structure, will have a company name. The right name is part of good marketing, making the business memorable; but the name must adhere to certain regulations and should not impinge on another businesses name.

A business name can be registered and protected as a trademark.

All businesses are required to disclose certain information in order that their customers can be sure with whom they are doing business.
