Summary

Commissioning and performance management of the NHS in England is the responsibility of NHS England and NHS Improvement.

NHS England has oversight of the whole commissioning system in England and supports the work of the local clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). It also has other roles including the commissioning of specialist services, healthcare for prisoners and military personnel, some public health programmes, clinical senates and networks, and primary care support services.
