Summary

Following the June 2016 UK referendum vote to leave the EU and subsequent government invocation of Article 50 in March 2017, the Government is now in negotiations to reach agreement on the terms of withdrawal. The objectives of the Government in these negotiations include leaving the Customs Union and Single Market, having control over the number of people coming into the country from the rest of the EU, seeking a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and maintaining an open land border with Ireland.
