Key Principles

The law requires regular attendance by pupils registered at a school, and parents are responsible for ensuring that this takes place. Absence can only be authorised by schools (not by parents).

Schools, other than boarding schools with no day pupils, must maintain an attendance register. At the beginning of each morning and during the afternoon session, the presence or absence of every pupil on the school roll should be recorded. A pupil arriving after the school closes its register may be marked as absent.

Schools can consult the school health service if the authenticity of an illness is in doubt.
