Assessment is an essential part of teaching and learning and also a way of measuring progress and evaluating success in schools. As an integral part of teaching the main purpose of assessment is to evaluate pupil progress and design the most effective teaching and learning strategies. Nationally, the results of assessment are used to produce performance tables, which are then used to compare attainment and the progress pupils make in different schools. These tables are public documents and parents are encouraged to use them when choosing between schools.

Teachers need to be clear about what it is they are trying to teach and then to assess it in a way that allows the pupil to demonstrate what they know, understand and are able to do. Assessment practice must be consistent across the school.
