Employees have a right to:

  • statutory adoption leave when newly matched with a child for adoption, either on their own or as part of a couple, by an approved adoption agency

  • police officers are excluded from the statutory right to take adoption leave. Police staff, as employees, do qualify for statutory adoption leave. Individual force policies may make certain provisions for police officers with regard to adoptions.

  • take 52 weeks’ adoption leave and, if eligible, 39 weeks’ of adoption pay — this employee may also be entitled to use a period of this adoption leave as shared parental leave (SPL)
