• Introduce a policy on adoption leave if the organisationcare service does not already have one.

  • Ensure that all managers understand the statutory entitlement to adoption leave and pay and are familiar with the organisation’s policy and procedure on adoption leave.

  • Note that police officers are excluded from the statutory right to take adoption leave; however, individual force policies may make certain provisions for police officers with regard to adoptions. Police staff do qualify for statutory adoption leave as employees.

  • Ensure that all managers understand how they should handle a request for adoption leave.
