• Make sure that employment contracts and staff handbooks clearly set out employees’ entitlements during sickness absence, including whether (and if so for how long) salary/wages will continue to be paid.

  • Notify employees in writing of the requirements for reporting sickness absence and providing evidence of incapacity.

  • Be aware that workplace stress is a major cause of both short-term and long-term absence.

  • Meet with employees to discuss and attempt to resolve short-term absenteeism issues.

  • Ensure that all managers and supervisors have the ability to conduct interviews and to support staff as appropriate during and following periods of sickness absence.
