An abnormal load is one that cannot legally be carried on a vehicle within the maximum weights and/or dimensions in the Construction and Use Regulations and Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations.
Such loads may be carried on vehicles known as “Special Types” vehicles under the Road Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (General) Order.
Legislation requires hauliers to notify the movement of most abnormal loads and abnormal vehicles to the highway and bridge authorities before moving them by road.
