"Total rewards? They want the money", exclaimed a colleague who works with financial services firms, at my mention of the declining bonus levels evident in the sector, with the recent announcements of bonus pools for last year's performance in the major and investment banks, says Duncan Brown. And reflecting on the early months of 2012, you might be forgiven for thinking that this is the traditional seasonal peak for criticism, as the banks report and reveal in their annual report and accounts these bonus pots and seemingly ever-higher executive remuneration levels.
