The Government’s proposals for introducing shared parental leave have been incorporated into the Children and Families Act 2014. It provides that:
employed mothers are entitled to 52 weeks of maternity leave as a day one right
mothers with partners, where they both meet the qualifying conditions for the shared parental leave system are able to end their maternity leave, after an initial two-week recovery period, and share the untaken balance of maternity leave and pay as shared parental leave and pay
parents are able to take shared parental leave concurrently or consecutively
shared parental leave must be taken in a minimum of one-week blocks
