What is the “written statement” and what information do I need to provide in it?

An employee is entitled under s.1 of the Employment Rights Act (ERA) 1996 to receive a statement of his or her employment particulars within two months of starting work*. The document sets out in writing some of the main employment terms, known as the “principal statement”.
