Escherichia coli commonly known as E. coli, is a bacteria naturally found in the intestines of man and animals where it breaks down cellulose and assists in the absorption of vitamin K. Most types of the bacteria are harmless, but others can cause a variety of gastrointestinal diseases and diarrhoea if ingested.
