Q

How much water can we take from a river before we have to inform the Environment Agency (EA)?

A

Water is abstracted from rivers for agriculture, industrial uses such as power generation and for drinking water. If excessive amounts are abstracted by any one user there may not be sufficient resources for others. Low flows caused by excessive abstraction also reduce water quality and harm aquatic ecosystems.
