How does the Government plan to achieve net zero in the transport sector?
Q
How does the Government plan to achieve net zero in the transport sector?
A
Transport is currently the highest-emitting sector in the UK. The Government published its Transport Decarbonisation Plan in July 2021 [www.gov.uk/government/speeches/transport-decarbonisation-plan]. It contains several targets and pledges of funding, though much of the detail awaits to be fleshed out in forthcoming consultations.
Headline targets
The UK has set a target to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030.
By 2022, 25% of the Government car fleet should be ultra-low emission and by 2027 all its 40,000 vehicle fleet should be zero emission.
