Training in the use of protective gloves

A number of employees have to wear protective gloves when handling chemicals. We have provided the gloves but a safety representative has insisted that we should be training employees in the use of them. Is that really necessary?

A number of employees have to wear protective gloves when handling chemicals. We have provided the gloves but a safety representative has insisted that we should be training employees in the use of them. Is that really necessary?

In this case, as the gloves are provided for protection against chemicals, the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 will be applicable rather than the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.

Regulation 7 requires the employer to provide appropriate protective measures including “the provision of suitable personal protective equipment” such as gloves.

In doing so, the employer must take into account the requirements of the general principles of control, which includes informing and training employees on “the use of control measures developed to minimise the risks”. Regulation 12 also requires the employer to provide suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training.
