Q

How can I support parents with helping their children to wash their hands and other self-care skills during this time of home isolation?

A

It is a worrying time for families and asking parents to do ‘home-work’ as we all get used to a new way of being together for extended periods may not be the right thing at the moment. Families may just need to reconnect and seek comfort from the relationships they have first. When you gauge that the time is right to share ideas with your families, then the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) development matters can be a useful guide. https://www.foundationyears.org.uk/files/2012/03/Development-Matters-FINAL-PRINT-AMENDED.pdf

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) supports children’s development and can be used to empower parents to understand the prime areas of development whilst they are at home for extended periods of time. This could help them focus on growing their confidence in supporting their child to learn and be ready for school, when that time comes. There will be anxiety about school applications and when the school system may re-open following the COVD-19 pandemic, so letting them know there are positive steps they can take may be well received. You know your families best, so consider the timing of communications with them around this so as not to heighten anxiety. It may be a good idea to get feedback from some parents first about what would be helpful to them as things change.
