What are Scope 3 emissions, and what responsibilities do small businesses have to report and reduce them?

A

Scope 3 emissions are greenhouse gas emissions which are associated with your business but over which you do not have direct control.

Your carbon footprint is made up from three different categories of emissions.

  • Scope 1: the greenhouse gases directly produced by your activities, eg from the fossil fuels burned on your premises.

  • Scope 2: the emissions associated with the production and distribution of the energy you use (eg electricity from the National Grid).
