Can care homes and hospices run medicines re-use schemes?
Whilst successful medicines re-use schemes already operate in NHS hospitals across the UK, such schemes have not previously been allowed in care homes and hospices. However, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), NHS England and NHS Improvement acknowledge a medicines re-use scheme may be appropriate under specific circumstances during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This will address increasing concerns about the medicines supply chain in care homes and hospices, alleviating some of the pressures in the forthcoming weeks.
