We provide our first aid at work qualified employees with annual refresher training. The question has arisen as to whether this can be provided by an experienced in-house first aid qualified employee?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in L74 First Aid at Work. Guidance on Regulations, strongly recommends that first aiders undertake annual refresher training during any three-year FAW/EFAW certification period as this will “help qualified first aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first-aid procedures”.

Refresher training also assumes that those who have previously accepted first-aider roles, are happy to continue to do so in the future. This should always be kept under review. There could be a host of personal reasons why a first-aider might not wish to continue in the role or, perhaps, they need reassurance on some point of concern. While it is sometimes argued that those with contracts of employment that require them to act as first-aiders must provide this service, the reality is that in an emergency situation there should be no hesitation or reluctance to provide the necessary first aid. So, there should still be discussion with the employee to try and resolve any issue they have regarding being a first-aider.
