Reducing the risk of choking

Children under three years are indeed particularly vulnerable to choking caused by a foreign object in their airway. This is because their trachea and bronchi are small and they have not yet developed full control of the muscles of their mouth and throat. An early years’ service must, therefore, complete appropriate risk assessments and have suitable policies and arrangements in place to ensure their safety.

Risk assessments should be completed by a competent person and should be subject to regular review.
