Why does our local authority refuse to collect most of the plastic packaging we generate? Items like yogurt pots and sandwich containers are marked with a recycling symbol but are not acceptable in our recycling bin. Shouldn’t we be trying to recycle as much as possible?

A

All local authorities are obliged to collect plastics for recycling. This is a requirement of the Waste Framework Directive, as implemented by the Waste (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2012 and Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012. However, the directive and regulations do not specify which types of plastic must be collected.
